Swift Wings is a collection of poems by Victor Neuburg with musical settings and is a project that emerged from Justin Hopper’s new book, Obsolete Spells, which is a collection of poems and prose from Victor Neuburg and The Vine Press. Neuburg was a little known poet and the poems in his 1921 collection Swift Wings: Songs in Sussex are hymns to old gods, paeans to nature, love, wonder, and the enchantment of the Sussex landscape. I chose a selection of poems from this collection to create music for and found myself enchanted by Neuburg’s ecstatic celebrations of the beauty of nature. Working on this project during lockdown and being sustained by walks in woodlands and patches of urban wildness meant that the poems resonated with me, and I lost myself in their world and found solace.
